  • clapclapcolour: ♫ GuMMy†Be▲R! - Arizona Lights ‘97 GuMMy†Be▲R! has been teasing us for about a month now with two new songs on Soundcloud and some introductory videos to his new EP, but today it’s finally here! Spectral Analysis counts four tracks and is released via Tundra Dubs, the label that released the new I†† album last week. If you are a little bit familiar with G†B’s previous work, you will know that he creates witch house music that is very much influenced by hip hop, showing in the heavy beats, and that he uses a lot of samples, sometimes to bring up social issues like paedophilia (“sexualCRIME”) and hate against homosexuals (“Leviticus”). Spectral Analysis EP has a somewhat different atmosphere. The beat is still very important, but not as prominent as in his older tracks and this time G†B paid more attention to developing the percussion in its entirety. This shows in a track like “Arizona Lights ‘97”, in which the tribal-like percussion serves as the core, yet still with an awful lot of bass to it. This track, named after famous UFO sightings in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997, is one of the best things I’ve heard this year. It punches you right in the face from the very beginning and remains captivating throughout due to the percussion and synthesizers. GuMMy†Be▲R!’s use of synths has improved as well on this latest EP, now really fitting together with the beats and percussion. This can be illustrated with a track like “The Elders Pt 2”, which starts off with a piano melody which is soon after joined by a synth melody that will just blow your socks off. I guarantee that after a few listens you will absolutely love this song. The biggest difference however, is the structure of this new EP. Whereas GuMMy†Be▲R!’s other EP’s felt a little incoherent, the tracks on this one go together amazingly well. Third track “GURL”, which is the heaviest track on the EP and the one that reminds the most of the preview videos with people beating each other up, is put between the two parts of “The Elders”. The sample with religious chanting that is used to make up part one returns in the second part, in that way gluing the EP together nicely. All in all I think that Spectral Analysis is GuMMy†Be▲R!’s best release up to date and I’m curious about what he will come up with next.   • clapclapcolour: ♫ I†† - D▲rkst▲r Thee I invoke, the Bornless one. Thee that didst create the Earth and the Heavens: Thee that didst create the Night and the Day. Thee that didst create the Darkness and the Light. One of my new favourite labels, Tundra Dubs, released a brand new EP this week by I†† (pronounce “eyedoublecross”), called The Lesser Keys. While a lot of witch house acts these days are inspired by the hip hop scene, I†† comes from a background of ambient noise and drone. An early EP of theirs, Isolationist Soundscapes, seems to be released before the which house craze (it doesn’t feature triangle-infested titles yet) and contains tracks varying from ambient noise to really heavy drone and industrial music. What this EP does have in common with I††’s later work is the hypnotic and unsettling aspect of it. The title of the The Lesser Keys EP refers to a 17th-century book on magic called “The Lesser Key of Solomon”. This book, said to be written by King Solomon, contains “detailed descriptions of spirits and the conjurations needed to evoke and oblige them to do the will of the conjurer”. I††’s previous EP Preliminary Invocations, released early October this year on AMDISCS, also refers to this book and more specifically to the introductory part of it. Their apparent interest in the occult definitely shows in these two EP’s, moving from a heavy sounding to a more eerie atmosphere. The Lesser Keys is perfect proof of the fact that I†† has indeed hopped on the witch house train, with its phaser effects, its uncanny sounds and its percussion soaked in reverb. Yet they haven’t in the least abandoned their roots in noise and drone music. You can still hear this influence in the sounds they use in tracks like “Ph▲sing” and “Sitriii” (this last one is a reference to one of the 72 demons in “The Lesser Key of Solomon”). Also the fact that I†† uses a lot of loops and the repetition of certain rhythms and sounds, is very characteristic to their music, again hailing from their ambient noise roots. You can also see this in the video’s made for two of their tracks: while video’s for other witch house acts often incorporate images from different sources, I††’s video’s use only a couple of shots (from the same scene), or even just one, showing the same repetition as in their music. Highlight on the EP for me is the here featured track “D▲rkst▲r”, a song that you don’t want to be listening to when you’re home alone and the power dies. The percussion is just amazing in this track. It seems like different kinds of percussion with different time signatures have been layered over one another, creating a very complex rhythmic structure and making the music less repetitive than the other tracks. “Transcending Virii” is a great track as well, yet totally different with the phaser effect punching in your face from the very beginning and the awfully high-pitched sounds that contrast with the deep sounds and bass soaked synthesizers in other tracks. If I would have to stick a visual description to this track it would definitely be one of a chopper in space during earth’s apocalypse. As I said in the introduction this EP is released through Tundra Dubs Records, a small CDr/tape label based in Berkeley, California. It is available at their bandcamp for a ridiculously low price. A friendly chill pinched our flesh while we told stories of couples that met horrific fates. Scared, you and the other clamor for a flash light, hoping to find sanctuary in the playful, microscopic dust particles floating in the yellow light. Suddenly, there is a faint knock at the window. An icy, distant tapping clicking on the glass. I pretend to ignore it but I am fully aware of its presence. Knock. Knock. Knock. While a few of you were scared, I calmly sat wrapped in my blanket - observing from afar. Knock. Knock. Knock. They huddle together, afraid of the fate that was awaiting them. At that instant, the door flings open, forcing everyone to scurry. I sat there cackling in delight as the two masked individuals ran wild causing terrifying, playful havoc. I††’s “A Tad Ghostal” conjures up bewitching witch house music that is ghostly and celebratory. The beats pound softly while the synths linger like spirits in the air. Almost like welcoming a nightmare at bedtime, there is a sense of danger lurking in the floating phantasm synths. It is beautifully ominous and, most of all, mysterious. Purchase the split cs here.
